Online gambling: what does the Belgian legislation say?

Belgium allows online gambling, while imposing certain rules and restrictions to protect players. This protection is also one of the primary missions of the Gaming Commission. Discover the main rules in force in our country.

The need for a license

Want to play gambling online? To help you stay in control, the law requires you to wager your money at licensed casinos or gaming sites.

Each gaming site must have a valid license. Only reliable online casinos have such authorization, and this is obviously the case with Lucky Games.

The minimum age is 21 years old

In Belgium, the minimum age to play in a casino is 21 years old. This rule also applies on the Internet: only people aged 21 or over are allowed to play gambling online.

Gaming sites and virtual casinos are required to verify your identity before accepting a bet. At Lucky Games, we treat your personal data with the utmost care.

Weekly deposit limit of 200 euros

You have the right to bet a maximum of 200 euros per week on the same gambling site. In Belgium, this limitation came into force in December 2022 to protect players.

The Gambling Commission also wishes to extend this rule to all online games of chance, in order to avoid problematic gambling behavior.

However, it is still possible to modify this maximum weekly amount of €200 by submitting the request to the casino concerned. After analysis and agreement of the Gaming Commission and the Belgian National Bank, you can modify your limit.

Each month, the Belgian Gaming Commission will actively investigate with the National Bank whether players with an increased deposit limit are registered as defaulters. As soon as this is the case, your limit will automatically be reduced to a maximum of €200 per week.

No promotions

Online gambling is particularly tempting. Since March 1, 2020, gambling sites and online casinos are prohibited from offering free gambling credits, in order to avoid any additional temptation.

This decision of the Belgian Constitutional Court also put an end to various promotions, such as welcome and deposit bonuses.

Lowering the deposit limit is always possible

Is the limit of €200 per week too high for you and do you want to protect yourself against financial difficulties? Then you can reduce this amount by submitting a request on the website of the relevant online casino. They are required to process your request immediately.

An additional tip from the Gambling Commission: don't spend more than 5% of your income on online gambling. For example, do you have a monthly income of €2000? Then deposit a maximum of €25 per week into your player account.
